London Unveiled

great places to visit off the beaten path.

Number One, London - Apsley House

Apsley House has perhaps the best address in London.  Home to the Dukes of Wellington (still partially used as a residence), this property sits prominently to the north of the Wellington Arch and in the south east corner of Hyde Park.

History:  Apsley House was built in 1771 but later purchased by the Duke of Wellington in 1817 as his London base from which he would pursue his career in politics.   The house contains a magnificent art collection and period decor.  The art is mostly prior property of the King of Spain.  The Waterloo gallery, named in celebration of the defeat of Napoleon, is a highlight of the building.

Visiting:  Managed by English Heritage it is open Weds - Sun 11-5, from March to Nov. Self-guided audio tours or guided tours are available.  Information can be found at:  http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/apsley-house/

Located at:  Number One, London  (or 149 Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner)

Closest tube: Hyde Park Corner
