Erno Goldfinger House

It is claimed that Ian Fleming was not a fan of Erno Goldfinger’s designs so he used his name as one of the most infamous Bond villains.  More certain is that as a known architect living in the same Hampstead community, Fleming was familiar with and liked the name.  Erno Goldfinger (1902-1987) was a Hungarian born architect and furniture designer - considered part of the ‘modern movement’.  He moved to London in 1934 and built several houses.  One group in Hampstead (1-3 Willow Road) contained his own home (#2) which is now owned and managed by the National Trust.  After WWII Goldfinger rose to prominance as a designed or tower block housing.

2 Willow Road has surprising design details that were ground-breaking at the time and still feel fresh today, the house also contains the Goldfingers’ impressive collection of modern art, intriguing personal possessions and innovative furniture.  From 11 to 2, there is an hourly expert-led guided tour.  From 3 to 5, explore the house unguided.  View modern art by Max Ernst, Henry Moore and Bridget Riley.  Other exhibition programmse of contemporary responses to Goldfinger’s work change.  Visit the website for more details: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/2-willow-road/
