London Unveiled

great places to visit off the beaten path.

A London Photo Challenge… can you identify these 5 sites?

Our Third Photo Challenge.

For our third London photo challenge there are five sites pictured below from all over central London.  While the primary theme of LondonUnveiled.com is to create awareness of “off the beaten path” sites, these five images all come from more touristy locations.  Whether you are a visitor to London or live here it is easy to miss some of the things that are in front of us.  Can you identify them?  I never know if these will be simple or hard so I’ve tried to vary the difficulty level.  Go ahead and post a comment with your best answers.  Correct answers will be posted in about a week.

Photo Challenge #1

Photo Challenge #1

(1) This image is of a memorial sculpture that is 10m (32 ft) tall atop an iconic building in London.  Unveiled in 2008 the shape was inspired the the steeple of the neighbouring church.  At night it glows.  There is a clue in the words you can read.  Do you know the name of this sculpture, where it is and what is memorializes?

(2) London is filled with statues, but most seem to be Royals or politicians.  This is neither and it’s not Shakespeare.  Where is this statue located and who is it of?  The location is fitting for this person.

Photo Challenge #3

Photo Challenge #3

(3) A wonderful little building in one of the busiest parts of London, but surprisingly not that well known.  Where is it and what is it?

Photo Challenge #4

Photo Challenge #4

(4) One of the most storied and popular small parks in London.  Usually when photos of this park are taken it is of the area just off camera to the right.  What park is this?

(5) Is this one too easy?  The banners and building name have been pixelated to avoid cheating.  The recent renovations have made this UNESCO World Heritage site a London highlight.

    I’m going to give it a try:
    1) “Breathing” on the BBC Building to remember the journalist who were killed while on assignment.
    2) Lawrence Olivier ~ location: South Bank River Walk
    3) Soho Square ~ house is near the location of John Snow’s House (John Snow was the one who figured out how cholera was being spread).
    4) St James Park (total guess on this one)
    5) Old Royal Naval Academy ~ this is the “Discover Greenwich” site

      Great job - can any other readers fill in the missing bits?
      #1, correct;
      #2 correct - but why that location?;
      #3 correct location, and yes, Snow did live in several places near Soho Square though not related to this unique building - but what is this little building?;
      #4 not correct - this is a much smaller park and the clues were ‘storied’ and the fraction of the shelter you can see in the right of the picture.
      #5 correct.
      Great job and thanks for taking a stab at it.

    Is the little building a black cab driver rest hut?

      Really good guess… as there are plenty of cabbie rest huts about but this is not one of them. Thank you for commenting!

    I can take a stab at numbers three and four, the hut in Soho Square and Postmans Park?

      Great job on #4… yes, Postmans Park. For those that haven’t been well worth a visit to read the brief stories of heroism memorialized on the plaques under the shelter.
      As to the hut in Soho Square, that is what it is, but I’m curious if anyone knows what’s its for?

    Is no 4 Berkley Square? I know its got a shelter in the middle which has a verandah.

    btw - I recognised Olivier on South Bank and Soho Square. Had no idea about the glass sculpture and thought Greenwich was Saatchi gallery. :)

      Another reader just commented on #4… it is Postmans Park.. hence the ‘storied’ history. A great little park to visit (see my other comment). Thanks for commenting.

    For the second photo: The statue of Lawrence Olivier is currently in front of the National Theatre, which he founded. Hence an appropriate location.

      Excellent! It is just over 50 years since the founding of the National Theatre. Olivier was the director for its first 10 years (tho’ it used the Old Vic at that time). But the location of his statue is appropriate.

  6. Oh god I feel so much pressure!
    1 - I have no idea. I probably should know but I totally don’t.
    2- based on the photo I would say it is on the south side of Waterloo Bridge but I don’t know who he is! Not doing well haha.
    3- Soho Square. That one I know!
    4 - Postman park. I am 98% sure.
    5 - the Maritime Museum?
    Not great guesses haha!

        Congrats on not cheating… never know whether to edit people’s responses so others can’t see but I think there’s something fun about building on prior responses too.

      Very fair guesses :-)
      Still waiting for a little more insight from someone on the ‘hut’ in Soho Square…

    This is great :) I am in London, so let’s see if I will be able to get more information on the “hut” in Soho Square :)

      Just posted the answers to the quiz… so you can read about the hut now. All the best, Ian
